80% of public schools complete antiquake work (Kyodo News, 2011)
The Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Ministry said Wednesday 80.3% of the nation’s 116,000 public school buildings had finished earthquake-resistance work as of April 1, up seven percentage points from a year before for the sharpest rise since 2002.
Of the 22,911 buildings with insufficient quake-resistance or that have not been evaluated, 4,614 would be at risk of collapse if hit by a quake registering upper-6 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7, according to the survey by the ministry.
