An option here in Tokyo for kids with learning challenges might be the Tokyo Sudbury School. It’s a new free school in Jiyugaoka modeled after the Sudbury Valley School in Boston. Sudbury doesn’t label children and the school has a long history of working with children who don’t fit into conventional settings and giving them space, freedom and respect within the context of a democratic school system. They have very clear rules about boundaries, respecting other children’s wishes and letting children spend their school days doing whatever they choose. Meetings attended by the entire student body decide every possible matter at the school and give children growing confidence to find their voices.-L.W.
