To our readers,

This is to let you know that we are beginning a new discussion with the intent to debating the merits of the ‘Triangle of Life’ way of surviving an earthquake … as opposed to the ‘Duck and Cover’ that we all know is such a way of life here in Japan among our school children. If we can determine that this is is indeed sound advice, it suggests that we should translate all this into Japanese and create a campaign or movement to change earthquake drill practices in Japanese schools…

As to why this Triangle of Life practice is not more well-known … it was suggested by Doug Copp that insurance companies have clamped down on this because they did not want more survivors who would be making out more insurance claims. (See attached comms. at the bottom of the page).

Snopes.com suggests that the Triangle of Life method is not appropriate for the U.S. (and presumably Japan) where there are higher building standards than developing countries and that we should instead follow the procedures (duck and cover) advocated by Red Cross and other established safety organizations in our countries. (See http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/household/triangle.asp)

The article Protect yourself during an earthquake ‘Drop, Cover and Hold On’ is an article that specifically takes on the recommendations of Triangle of Life and has this to say:

“Official Rescue Teams from the U.S. and other countries who have searched for trapped people in collapsed structures around the world, as well as emergency managers, researchers, and school safety advocates, all agree that “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” is the appropriate action to reduce injury and death during earthquakes. Methods like standing in a doorway, running outside, and “triangle of life” method are considered dangerous and are not recommended.”

Does anybody have any more sources of research or more arguments for validating or disputing the “Triangle of Life” method?

Below, I append

1) the text from Doug Copp on Where to Go During an Earthquake (from his blog); and then
2) Doug Copps’ personal comms. on why the ‘Triangle of Life’ has no support;
6) News and headlines and the ARTI website: http://www.amerrescue.org/

This has been outside my radar until now, but with having experienced an hitherto unimaginable M9 earthquake, here is a real story worth going to the press for…and certainly worth going to our local PTAs and MEXT for.

Where to Go During an Earthquake

Remember that stuff about hiding under a table or standing in a doorway? Well, forget it! This is a real eye opener. It could save your life someday.

EXTRACT FROM DOUG COPP’S ARTICLE ON ‘THE TRIANGLE OF LIFE’

My name is Doug Copp. I am the Rescue Chief and Disaster Manager of the American Rescue Team International (ARTI ), the world’s most experienced rescue team. The information in this article will save lives in an earthquake.

I have crawled inside 875 collapsed buildings, worked with rescue teams from 60 countries, founded rescue teams in several countries, and I am a member of many rescue teams from many countries. I was the United Nations expert in Disaster Mitigation for two years, and have worked at every major disaster in the world since 1985, except for simultaneous disasters.

The first building I ever crawled inside of was a school in Mexico City during the 1985 earthquake. Every child was under its desk. Every child was crushed to the thickness of their bones. They could have survived by lying down next to their desks in the aisles. It was obscene — unnecessary.

Simply stated, when buildings collapse, the weight of the ceilings falling upon the objects or furniture inside crushes these objects, leaving a space or void next to them – NOT under them. This space is what I call the ‘triangle of life’. The larger the object, the stronger, the less it will compact. The less the object compacts, the larger the void, the greater the probability that the person who is using this void for safety will not be injured. The next time you watch collapsed buildings, on television, count the ‘triangles’ you see formed. They are everywhere. It is the most common shape, you will see, in a collapsed building.

TIPS FOR EARTHQUAKE SAFETY

1) Most everyone who simply ‘ducks and covers’ when building collapse are crushed to death. People who get under objects, like desks or cars, are crushed.

2) Cats, dogs and babies often naturally curl up in the fetal position. You should too in an earthquake. It is a natural safety/survival instinct. You can survive in a smaller void. Get next to an object, next to a sofa, next to a bed, next to a large bulky object that will compress slightly but leave a void next to it.

3) Wooden buildings are the safest type of construction to be in during an earthquake. Wood is flexible and moves with the force of the earthquake. If the wooden building does collapse, large survival voids are created. Also, the wooden building has less concentrated, crushing weight. Brick buildings will break into individual bricks. Bricks will cause many injuries but less squashed bodies than concrete slabs.

4) If you are in bed during the night and an earthquake occurs, simply roll off the bed. A safe void will exist around the bed. Hotels can achieve a much greater survival rate in earthquakes, simply by posting a sign on the back of the door of every room telling occupants to lie down on the floor, next to the bottom of the bed during an earthquake.

5) If an earthquake happens and you cannot easily escape by getting out the door or window, then lie down and curl up in the fetal position next to a sofa, or large chair.

6) Most everyone who gets under a doorway when buildings collapse is killed. How? If you stand under a doorway and the doorjamb falls forward or backward you will be crushed by the ceiling above. If the door jam falls sideways you will be cut in half by the doorway. In either case, you will be killed!

7) Never go to the stairs. The stairs have a different ‘moment of frequency’ (they swing separately from the main part of the building). The stairs and remainder of the building continuously bump into each other until structural failure of the stairs takes place. The people who get on stairs before they fail are chopped up by the stair treads – horribly mutilated. Even if the building doesn’t collapse, stay away from the stairs. The stairs are a likely part of the building to be damaged. Even if the stairs are not collapsed by the earthquake, they may collapse later when overloaded by fleeing people. They should always be checked for safety, even when the rest of the building is not damaged.

8) Get near the outer walls of buildings or outside of them if possible – It is much better to be near the outside of the building rather than the interior. The farther inside you are from the outside perimeter of the building the greater the probability that your escape route will be blocked.

9) People inside of their vehicles are crushed when the road above falls in an earthquake and crushes their vehicles; which is exactly what happened with the slabs between the decks of the Nimitz Freeway. The victims of the San Francisco earthquake all stayed inside of their vehicles. They were all killed. They could have easily survived by getting out and sitting or lying next to their vehicles. Everyone killed would have survived if they had been able to get out of their cars and sit or lie next to them. All the crushed cars had voids 3 feet high next to them, except for the cars that had columns fall directly across them.

10) I discovered, while crawling inside of collapsed newspaper offices and other offices with a lot of paper, that paper does not compact. Large voids are found surrounding stacks of paper.

The entire world is experiencing natural calamities so be prepared!

‘We are but angels with one wing, it takes two to fly’

In 1996 we made a film, which proved my survival methodology to be correct. The Turkish Federal Government, City of Istanbul, University of Istanbul Case Productions and ARTI cooperated to film this practical, scientific test. We collapsed a school and a home with 20 mannequins inside. Ten mannequins did ‘duck and cover,’ and ten mannequins I used in my ‘triangle of life’ survival method. After the simulated earthquake collapse we crawled through the rubble and entered the building to film and document the results. The film, in which I practiced my survival techniques under directly observable, scientific conditions , relevant to building collapse, showed there would have been zero percent survival for those doing duck and cover.

There would likely have been 100 percent survivability for people using my method of the ‘triangle of life.’ This film has been seen by millions of viewers on television in Turkey and the rest of Europe, and it was seen in the USA , Canada and Latin America on the TV program Real TV.

“Dear Cristiano:

You may be familiar with the information contained, in my signature, below…that the Insurance Companies have told the school boards who are their ‘insured’ that they will charge an increased premium or will no longer insure the school boards, if they change the policy from ‘duck and cover’ to the ‘ triangle of life’.They are concerned that shareholder profit will be negatively impacted by school children surviving and seeking compensation.

Regarding the information, that you sent me: I am sad to tell you that our world is so f—ked up that I knew this information 20 years ago. Matt Wyatt, the safety and security officer for Apple Computer was supporting a scientist who was conducting these studies with positive success. He had an 85% success rate. I notice the documents that you sent are dated 11 years ago.

Seismologist Association ‘crushed’ him like a goliath jumping on a grape. I wouldn’t be surprised if they went so far as to kill him. It wouldn’t be the first time such action was taken and it certainly won’t be the last. It is just another example of how vested financial and powerful interests crush everything which they see as a possible threat.

Perhaps, this scientific discovery will eventually overcome all the obstacles and become practically useful for saving lives..in a hundred years but it will be a rare exemption if it is allowed to flourish prior to that.

Seismologist’s have a heavy burden on their souls. They study movements of the earth and layers of soil and yet they claim ( without any study, knowledge and/or experience) to be experts in earthquake survival. I have a very low regard for people who endanger people’s lives for their own personal and selfish gain. It is a shame but it is the reality we live in.

The next bit is from Doug Copp’s Triangle of Life blog: The History of Duck and Cover from a 22nd Century Perspective http://dougcopp.wordpress.com/2011/01/23/the-history-of-duck-and-cover-from-a-22nd-century-perspective/

At this time, in History, The Insurance Company Executive’s worst nightmare was a child who became sick, injured or traumatized as a result of a ‘loss’ occurring at an insured school board’s property. Sick children were the costliest expenditure that an insurance company can have; requiring, a life time of potential payments or financial loss.

The potential problem of Corporate Financial Loss became reduced; in other words, Schoolchildren became ‘cheaper and less trouble’ if they were immediately killed rather than requiring treatment or compensation. The decision was made to follow the same policy as eliminating children from medical coverage, after they became sick. If a loophole could be found to cancel a child’s medical coverage, it was considered to be worthy of a ‘bonus’ on the paycheck of an Insurance Company Elimination Specialist.

At this time, in History, civilization and the value of human life had not developed, to the point, that human life was considered to be more important than Insurance Company profits. American Insurance Companies had concluded that actuarial realities would dominate. It was more profitable if children were allowed to die during building collapse. The cost of a dead child was finite, concluded and insignificant.

The cost of treating a child who survived by using the ‘triangle of life’ was prohibitive. The cost of treating a child for either trauma and/or physical injury would be combined with compensation being sought from the School Board Insured. School Boards were not willing to pay the increased cost of premiums for surviving children. It was decided to continue ‘duck and cover’ and ‘cover-up’ the profit motives and other Corporate malfeasance. This resulted in the death of more than 25 million children before it was stopped.

A brief History of ‘duck and cover’ explains more. ‘Duck and cover’ was created by Archer Productions, a Madison Ave Marketing firm under contract with the Pentagon. It was NOT created by safety, health or rescue experts. They had no input. It was created by a propaganda advertising firm.

‘Duck and Cover’ was created to calm the people that they would be safe from an atomic bomb blast if they just dropped to the ground and covered their head with a newspaper or a blanket. Archer Productions produced these aka ‘Bert the Safety Turtle’ commercials.Duck and Cover became insidious when it was taken into the classroom. This propaganda was brainwashed into the mind of every American Schoolchild. The other countries of the world followed America’s lead; since, America was the most dominant culture and economy, at the time. Even though, some of these countries did not have Insurance Company Corporate Concerns, for ‘shareholder profit’ because they either had Universal Health Care or law suits (corporate liability was not accepted) America’s social and cultural dominance slowed down their acceptance of the ‘triangle of life’.

‘Duck and cover’ resulted in a loss of 200,000-300,000 lives per year.

Doug Copp, discovered ‘the triangle of life’ when he crawled inside of collapsed schools and saw what actually happened..who lived and who died. Doug had been the most experienced rescuer, in the world, prior to becoming permanently disabled, from his 911 injuries. He shifted the focus of his life. Since, he could no longer rescue people buried alive, he decided to follow the lead of Luther and other individuals who considered that their principles and their conscience were more important than their safety, comfort, material well being or their life. Doug created a website and blog with hundreds of documents, videos and other proof to support the ‘triangle of life’.

As usual among people, who interfere with Corporate profits, on such a large scale, Doug Copp endured death threats, slander, abuse and much more from the vested interests who saw ‘duck and cover’ vs ‘the triangle of life’ as an extension of Obama’s Health Care Program. In other words, Corporate profits VS human life. American Insurance Companies, prior to Obama Health Care had dropped children from medical care coverage because of pre existing conditions. They were saving the same kind of dollars by maintaining ‘duck and cover’ and stopping ‘the triangle of life’.

This was nasty, once children became sick the American Insurance Companies would hire detectives, lawyers and specialists to find loop holes so that they could drop the child from coverage even if the parents had faithfully paid premiums, for years. This policy saved the American Insurance Companies vast sums of money which could be diverted from the expenditure column into the profits column.

The same policy was enforced against schoolchildren. Schoolchildren were told to duck and cover so that they would not negatively impact Corporate shareholder profits, by living.

The Triangle of Life followed the path of all truth and eventually became widely accepted. The ‘triangle of life’ started spreading around the world, as a viral email, then it became accepted by the most intelligent and powerful people, of the world, for their own safety and protection; however, it was not allowed to become more important than Corporate Profit until schoolchildren’s deaths reached more than 25 million. ( 1,000 schools collapsed in 2010, alone)

**It is sad to note that the Premises for the logarithms, designed to analyze, the actuarial risk conclusions, for the risk analysis regarding ‘triangle of life vs ‘duck and cover’ were incorrect. The Insurance Companies assumed that the number and cost of survivor injuries; as a result, of following the ‘triangle of life’ would be the same as the number and cost of the injuries of pre ‘triangle of life’ survivors or ‘duck and cover’ survivors. In other words that the injuries factor (co-efficent of injuries) would remain constant. This was a false presumption. (The actual number and cost of ‘triangle of life’ survivors is 1/10 of the cost of ‘duck and cover’ survivors. ‘Triangle of life’ injuries are much less frequent and/or as serious as ‘duck and cover injuries.) The profitability of ‘triangle of life’ further increased when considering the fact that 90% of victims would survive, requiring no death compensation vs ‘the payout’ for ‘duck and cover’ deaths, at 90% dead.

As History unfolded, the American Insurance Corporations, using ‘the triangle of life’ vs the ‘duck and cover’, victim response procedures; would reduce it’s ‘payouts’, for death compensation from 98% of schoolchildren dead and requiring death compensation; to 10% requiring death ‘payout’ compensation regarding the ‘triangle of life method.

When the saving from death payouts and the ‘real life’ costs of ‘triangle of life’ injuries were calculated it was found that the actuarial costs of a ‘triangle of life’ policy was not prohibitive. Combined with the positive advertising and marketing opportunities presented by saving so many school children lives the Insurance Companies found the replacement of ‘duck and cover’ by ‘the triangle of life’ to be a net financial gain.

In our next class, we will discus the downfall of one of America’s most media savy corporations. The American Red Cross; in spite of, a long history, of facing lawsuits for theft, fraud and keeping billions of dollars of donations yearly, for their own enjoyment, collapsed because the people discovered the malfeasant role they had played with their (American Insurance Corporations) Corporate Partners.

Prior to their collapse, they had been known among the media industry as the most effective organization, in the world, at collecting donations; through their 3 billion dollar per year media blitz. The media savy overcame the incidental reports of theft, fraud and corruption that followed every disaster/financial campaign. Actor Sean Penn complaining of theft from Haiti donations was just another in a long string of ARC scandals. David Letterman, Jay Leno, Joan Rivers and others had complained about the 6 billion stolen from Victims of 911. The Governor of Minnesota-floods, the mayor of San Francisco…earthquake…the Fire Storm scandal of San Diego no scandal couldn’t be overcome by the ARC 3 billion per year media campaign…continued.

A comment from doug copp Jan 23 rd 2011:

Last week, an American Red Cross Exectutive asked to join my rescue team; so that he could be trained. He thought it would benefit him to know something about disasters. I responded to him with a question: I asked him what he could possibly do to change the American Red Cross Corporate Policy of supporting ‘corporate’ profits, at any price; that is, by supporting ‘Duck and Cover’. I told him that more people die; as a result of, ‘duck and cover’ than all the lives saved, by all the rescue teams, in the world combined.

If the American Red Cross would do the right thing and support the triangle of life it would save more lives than all the efforts, of all the rescue teams, throughout the world..combined..

His response: he never responded.
